Under the PYP Program, the teachers in grades Kindergarten through Fifth will facilitate a total of six units of inquiry. The fifth grade students will also complete an exhibition during one of the units of inquiry. During the exhibition, the class will generate a relevant and realistic proposal for solving a real world problem, local or global. Students will inquire into the six following organizing themes.
1. Who we are
An inquiry into: an exploration of the nature of the self; of our beliefs and values; of personal, physical, mental, social, and spiritual health; of our families, friends, communities and cultures; of our rights and responsibilities; of what it means to be human.
2. Where we are in place and time
An inquiry into: an exploration of our orientation in place and time; of our histories; of our homes and journeys; of the discoveries, explorations and migrations of human kind; of the contributions of individuals and civilizations.
3. How we express ourselves
An inquiry into: An exploration of the ways in which we discover and express our nature, ideas, feelings, beliefs, and values through language and the arts.
4. How the world works
An inquiry into: an exploration of the physical and material world; of natural and human-made phenomena; of the world of science and technology.
5. How we organize ourselves
An inquiry into: An exploration of human systems and communities; of the world of work; its nature and its value; of employment and unemployment and their impact on us and the world around us.
6. Sharing the planet
An inquiry into: an exploration of our rights and responsibilities as we strive to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; of communities and of the relationships within and between them.
